Introductions. Provide brief background on each individual’s fishing background, a brief summary of your boat and crew, etc. What is your home port, current fishing interests, goals/objectives for the ’02 fishing season, etc. (Fill out contact list spreadsheet with more detail.)
Ask new members what their specific interest is for getting involved with the club, and equally important, what would like to put into it.
Determine best day of month and location for recurring meetings. May differ for summer and winter schedules.
Develop fee structure for club. What should membership costs be, and what are the fees used for? (To cover expenses incurred? To add to account for bigger events? Pay-as-you-go for monthly meeting venues?) What about walk-in meeting participants who are not members but are attracted to a single venue?
Elect individuals to take on officer roles in the club. Initial term will be for 12 months; future terms could be longer. At present time, we see the need for the following roles (subject to change as our PJSA grows and matures):
Role: President Responsibilities: Coordinate club activities, work with other officers to organize events and activities, manage internal communications for club. Candidate: Al Gillen
Role:Vice President Responsibilities: Develop membership and promote club activities; back up president. Explore discount opportunities for members, travel fishing trips, etc. Candidate: Joel Harnick
Role: Treasurer Responsibilities: Manage assets and work with events manager to pay for speakers or other cost items related to monthly meetings. Candidate: None yet
Role: Event Manager Responsibilities: Coordinate meetings and other events; develop educational programs and arrange for guest speakers at the meetings. Candidates: None yet
Develop agenda for next two or three meetings. Ideally, we need to include at least one educational venue (approximately 60 minutes in length). Ideas for educational venues may include these ideas and other ideas presented at the meeting (please bring your ideas to the meeting!):
Bring in speaker to address the topic of safety at sea, search and rescue, and surviving a disaster at sea. Possibilities include a SAR Coast Guardsman or possibly a safety expert.
Practical medicine at sea. How to remove hooks, what to do with slip and falls, lacerations, and other common ailments. What the average non-medical professional should carry aboard.
Bait rigging free-for-all. Nominate two or three members with lots of bait rigging experience to present their favorite and most reliable rigs.
Lure rigging presentation by professionals. (Winter venue, could try to hire tackle store pro to present.)
Canyon fishing by the pros (Winter venue, try and get professional captain to present?)
Wreck fishing by the pros. (hire charter capt expert or possibly a member presentation?)
Penn Reels servicing workshop (Winter venue). Bring your favorite International.
