Bob Boden with a tuna caught aboard Bob Ahrendt's Lucky Lady on a trip taken overnight Sept 2-3.

Norm Beetham along with George showing off some jumbo squid taken from the bottom on Sept 2.

Joel Harnick bested this 68.5 pound yellowfin tuna on August 19 north of Carteret Canyon.

Bob Ahrendt put together a tournament team - made up of George Plant, Dave Locandro, Joel Harnick, John and Kurt Henjes - to fish the Beach Haven Tuna and Marlin Club's tournament in July. Here the crew is putting the boat up at the scales for weigh-in of a pair of yellowfin tuna.

Team Lucky Lady first got up on the board with this 58 pound bluefin landed July 7, which has been displaced by heavier entries from Bob's team.

Third Place: Ron Kovler
  1. 81 pound YFT caught 08/30
  2. 64 pound YFT caught 08/30
  3. 57.5 pound bluefin tuna caught 8/5
Total stringer weight: 202.5 pounds

Making the best effort he could on a snotty day, Ron Kovler (left) fished between the AC Ridge and the 28 mile wreck to boat this bluefin tuna, before he released a fabulous blue marlin highlighted below. Some might say that Ron has a lot of luck... maybe so, but he gets lucky a lot more than most guys!

Honorable Mention: Brian Hunter
  1. 68 pound yellowfin tuna caught 09/04
  2. 68 pound yellowfin tuna caught 09/04
  3. 63 pound yellowfin tuna caught 09/04
Total stringer weight: 199 pounds

Neal Philiph

  1. Three YFTs caught 08/30
Total stringer weight: Not weighed>

Neal's crew aboard the Quarry Master had a great overnight trip in late August with a good pull of tuna and a blue marlin release - but they don't have a scale and were unable to submit weights on these tuna!

Ray Hombach

  1. 53.3 pound bluefin tuna caught 7/14
  2. 45.4 pound bluefin tuna caught 6/30
  3. Tuna #3
Total stringer weight: 98.7 pounds

Ray's team gets out early to catch the early bite!

What a great day to be out fishing!

And Team Whiskey Tango gets the job done with this 45.4 pound bluefin!

Greg Mulligan

  1. 40 pound ongfin tuna caught 8/18
  2. open
  3. open
Total stringer weight: 40 pounds

Says Greg, "The Bosslady, Joe Cermele, Rich Andres and I ran to the Tom's for a day trip on the Mulldogg. We went 1 for 2 on long fins - we had about 6 strikes on that flurry, 2 hooked up, and Susanne put the heat on this fish and put it in the boat!" Good job Susanne for showing the guys how to get the job done!!

Al Gillen

  1. 68 pound yellowfin caught 8/12
  2. open
  3. open
Total stringer weight: 68 pounds

Neal Philiph made short work of this 68 pound tuna on standup gear on August 12 while fishing aboard Al Gillen's boat, along with Ken and Corey Bennett.

Nick Veneziale

  1. Longfin tuna caught 7/26
  2. Tuna #2
  3. Tuna #3

Shark Division:

First Place: Brian Hunter - 340 points
  1. 19 blue shark releases - 10 points each for total of 190 points (6/16)
  2. Mako release - 150 points (6/28)

One of those 19 sharks that Brian Hunter released on June 16.

Open wide while we cut this leader close to the shank of the hook!

After a dozen blue sharks, it must get pretty boring pulling them in on heavy tackle, so Brian and his crew evened up the game by using spinning tackle to do battle with the swarm of blue sharks. Let's be glad that was not when Mr. Mako arrived in the slick!

Second Place: Ray Hombach - 330 points
  1. Est. 40 pound Mako released - 150 points (6/23)
  2. 3 Bluesharks released - 10 points each for total of 30 points (6/23)
  3. Mako released - 150 points (6/29)

A mako that was released by Ray Hombach. Good for 150 points when released.

A blue shark that was released by Ray Hombach. Good for an additional 10 points!

A mako shark that went home for the dinner table, but was under PJSA's 150 pound minimum, therefore counts for zero points. Still, nice job bagging that fish Ray!

And here's Ray's mako release from June 29.

Third Place: Greg Mulligan - 50 Points
  1. Brown shark release - 10 points (7/14)
  2. Hammerhead shark release - 10 points (7/14)
  3. Two brown shark releases - 20 points (9/13)
  4. Dusky shark release - 10 points (9/13)

Greg Mulligan and his wife Susanne went sharking and had some luck. Greg says, "After short two hour shark drift we leadered a brown shark and a hammer head next to the boat. The hammerhead was about the same size as the brown shark in the pic attached, but had a lot more fuel left in him when I grabbed the leader and took off and popped the leader. Either way, it was good to land something bigger than a striper this year!" (Note: we like that pink rod!)

In a last ditch effort to get the mako releases he needed to climb up in the standings, Greg Mulligan headed offshore on Sept. 13. No makos would bite, but he had some fun with the browns and a dusky.

Honorable Mention: Bob Ahrendt - 10 Points

Neal Philiph on the leader with the man in the blue suit at the other end!
