2007 Schedule of Events

  • Saturday, January 20 (8:45 a.m.-4:00 p.m.): Boating Safety Class. Location - Pendel/Middletown EMS (PMEMS)

With the new law in NJ taking effect during 2007 for boaters who were born in 1959 or later (those born in 1949-1958 have until June 2008), many of us need a boating safety certificate before spring. Fortunately, we have a Coast Guard Auxiliary member in the club, Lee Burden, who is setting up a class for club members. This will be an all day event, and will cost $40 per person, which covers course materials, book, and certification card. Please email Al Gillen or Kurt Henjes if you are interested, and follow up with payment to get yourself confirmed for this class. Remember that your crew, your spouse, and your kids may not operate your boat in NJ waters without a certificate, so you may want to invinte them to participate in this class, too (same exact fee as PJSA members). .

  • Saturday, February 10 (10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.): Annual Rigging Clinic. (Location - PMEMS)

This year we will break the clinic into two sessions, a morning session that will focus on the basics of rigging (knots, splices, crimping, basic lure rigging, etc.), and will have very specialized attention paid to the members that come in for the basic tutorial. The afternoon session, which will focus on advanced rigging techniques (ballyhoo, rigged eels, mullet dredges, circle hook ballyhoo rigs, etc.). You are welcome to attend morning, afternoon, or both sessions. This event is free for members (other than a nominal cost for lunch - if you want some). Non-members cost $10 each (to cover supplies, payable at the door), and are welcomed at this event. We would appreciate an RSVP (indicate morning, afternoon, or both) so we know what kind of rigging supplies we need to provide. No need to send money in advance for this event.

  • Saturday, March 3 (8:45 a.m.-3:30 p.m.): CPR/First Aid Class. (Location - PMEMS)

A medical emergency out offshore can happen at any time, and being prepared is critical if you are going to do your best for the crew member involved in such an emergency. This class will be taught by a professional EMT, and will be an all day event. Cost is $35 per person (covering course materials), but note that a minimum of 10 people must be registered for this class to be scheduled.. Several members have asked for this class, so we hope to see good participation. Please email Al Gillen or Kurt Henjes if you are interested, and send in your fee to the PJSA PO Box by January 15 so we can get course materials on order.

  • March: No meeting - half the club is in Hatteras fishing

  • Sunday April 1: Opening of 2007 PJSA Tog and Sea Bass Wreck Tournament

  • Wednesday April 18 at 7:00 p.m.: Weather (Location: PMEMS)

    Agenda:

    - Understanding Weather for Fishermen Presented by Chris Beetham
    - Kick off of 2007 Wreck Tourney.

Chris Beetham is an environmental scientist with over 17 years of experience in environmental remediation consulting and a life-long interest in weather. A 1989 graduate of Drexel University, in 2006 Chris completed a three-year online program in Broadcast Meteorology through Mississippi State University.

    • General Weather Patterns in the Mid-Atlantic Region
    • Scales of Weather
    • Marine Weather and Forecasting
    • Radar and Satellite Imagery
    • Weather Resources

  • Wednesday May 16 (7:00 p.m.): Tuna Fishing (Location: PMEMS)

    - An Obsession for Tuna Fishing - Capt. Keith Burnet
    - Kick-off of 2007 Offshore Bragging Rights Tournament

Keith Burnet is one of the most precise and deliberate offshore fisherman you will ever meet. He fishes aboard his immaculate 38' Henriques appropriately named Obsession, and he leaves no stone unturned when preparing for a trip to the edge. He starts his offshore season fishing out of Ocean City, MD for two weeks in early July for bluefin, yellowfin and marlin, then returns North to Barnegat to work the canyons from Wilmington north to Hudson Canyon through the remainder of the season.

He will join us at our May meeting to cover his fine-tuned approach to catching tuna.

  • Saturday, May 19, 2007: Second Annual Bob Ahrendt Kids Bluefish Tournament

Now in its second year, this tournament was a smashing success for the next generation of PJSA members. Every kid caught a fish, and every fish won a prize - there were prizes handed out for the first fish, the prettiest fish, the last fish, and rumor has it, the ugliest and most bloody fish. Run out of Bob's home on Great Bay, you should participate in this mostly free event (free other than contributing some food) even if you have to borrow a kid!
